Teal and orange color grading: how to do it well

Teal and orange works because skin sits on the orange side of the wheel. How to build the split, protect faces, and the four places it falls apart.

Teal and orange color grading pushes shadows and backgrounds toward cyan-blue while holding skin and highlights on the warm side, so faces separate from everything behind them. It works because the two hues sit almost opposite each other on the color wheel and human skin already lives on the orange half. Done carelessly it turns foliage cyan and faces tangerine.

Adobe's own explainer states the mechanism plainly: "Orange and teal are complementary colors. In essence, they are opposites. They look good together and contrast well," and "Many skin tones fall into the orange spectrum, so pushing blues into the shadows will help those skin tones stand out" (adobe.com, read 12 September 2026).

Where it came from

The look is old enough to have been a controversy. Wikipedia's color grading article dates the wave: "From 2010, many films, such as Hot Tub Time Machine and Iron Man 2, began using the complementary colors orange and teal" (en.wikipedia.org, read 12 September 2026).

The piece usually credited with naming it appeared the same year, and it was a complaint rather than a tutorial. Todd Miro's essay "Teal and Orange – Hollywood, Please Stop the Madness" worked out the logic the industry had arrived at: "flesh tones exist mostly in the orange range and when you look to the opposite end of the color wheel from that, where does one land? Why looky here, we have our old friend Mr. Teal" (Into The Abyss, 14 March 2010, theabyssgazes.blogspot.com, read 12 September 2026).

Two things follow. First, the technique is not a trick — it is the most efficient way to make a face pop out of a frame, which is why it spread. Second, it has been the default for fifteen years, so applying it without a reason now reads as a default rather than a decision.

Step by step

1. Correct before you do anything creative. Apply the input transform, fix exposure, get white balance neutral, set the black point. The split you are about to build is a deviation from neutral; if there is no neutral underneath it, you are stacking a look on a mistake. Almost every teal-and-orange attempt that looks cheap was applied to footage that had never been balanced. The order is in how to color grade video.

2. Build contrast with a curve. Lift the black point slightly so the shadows have room to carry color — a fully crushed shadow cannot be teal, it is just black. Roll the highlights off so the warm end has somewhere to go.

3. Split the tonal ranges. Cool the shadows, warm the highlights, leave the midtones mostly alone at first. In wheels terms that is a cyan-blue push on lift and an amber push on gain; with curves it is the red channel lifted in the highlights and lowered in the shadows, blue the reverse. Adobe describes the same move as using "the color correction tool to push blues or teals into the shadows and oranges or yellows into the highlights".

Start smaller than you think. The look reads at a fraction of the strength most tutorials demonstrate, and the gap between "graded" and "filtered" is about ten units of wheel movement.

4. Protect skin. This is the step that separates a grade from a preset. The shadow push will reach the shaded side of every face and the warm push will reach the lit side, so faces need pulling back independently — with a hue qualifier, a mask, or a dedicated skin control.

Check it on a vectorscope rather than by eye. Blackmagic's scope documentation gives the target: keep "warm color saturation along a line at approximately 10 o'clock on the vectorscope. This is known as the 'fleshtone line' and is based on the color of blood beneath the skin's surface", and it "is applicable to all skin pigmentations" (Blackmagic SmartScope manual, read 12 September 2026). Faces should sit on or very near that line. If the split has dragged them clockwise toward pure red-orange, you have gone too far.

5. Check the whole scene, not the hero frame. Apply it to every shot in the sequence and watch it in motion. A split that flatters a close-up often wrecks the wide, because the wide contains sky, foliage or a window that the close-up did not.

Where it fails

Four situations, all common.

Mixed light. A frame lit by a window and a tungsten practical already has two neutrals. Pushing shadows cool and highlights warm exaggerates a division that was an accident of the location, and the result reads as a mistake rather than a style. Fix the white balance locally first, or pick a different look.

Green foliage. Grass and leaves sit next to cyan on the wheel, so a shadow push tips them straight into it. A whole exterior can go from summer to swimming pool in five units. If the frame is half foliage, qualify the greens out of the shadow push or accept a weaker split.

Skin drifting. The most common failure and the most visible. Faces move off the fleshtone line, usually toward orange, and read as fake tan. The fix is always the same: isolate skin and pull it back, do not reduce the whole look.

Already-warm footage. Golden-hour or tungsten-lit material is halfway to the warm end already. Adding more produces orange without adding contrast, because there is nothing cool left to contrast against. Cool the shadows and leave the highlights alone.

There is also the taste problem: on a 2026 delivery, a strong teal-and-orange split reads as dated to anyone who watches a lot of film. Use it because the frame needs the separation, not because it is what a cinematic grade is supposed to look like.

What to use instead

  • A weaker version of the same idea. Keep the complementary logic and halve the strength. Most modern work that feels "graded" is doing exactly this.
  • A single-hue cast. One consistent color through the midtones, neutral skin, no split at all. Cleaner and harder to date.
  • Pastel and matte. Lifted blacks, low contrast, low saturation, one accent color. Currently dominant in commercial and fashion work.
  • Bleach bypass. If what you actually want is separation and punch rather than warmth: high contrast, heavily desaturated. Kodak describes the photochemical original as retaining image silver so that it "increases the contrast of the image and decreases the color saturation" (kodak.com, read 12 September 2026).

Doing it in Leumos

Creative controls. Build the split manually — contrast, warmth and color adjustments on a selected shot, reviewed in motion against the original.

The Skin tone control. The dedicated skin control "automatically select[s] skin, inspect[s] and refine[s] the selection mask, then adjust[s] hue, warmth, color boost, brightness, and contrast" (leumos.ai/llms.txt, read 12 September 2026). The inspectable mask matters here: step four fails silently when you cannot see what the tool decided was skin.

Reference matching. If you have a still that already carries the look, match a selected shot to it and adjust from the result. Matching runs on one selected shot at a time and is reviewed; automatic reference matching of a full timeline is not available in this release. What is the best alternative to teal and orange?

A single-hue midtone cast with neutral skin, or a low-contrast pastel look with one saturated accent. If you want punch rather than warmth, a bleach-bypass-style grade — high contrast, low saturation — gives separation without the complementary cliché.

Can I just use a teal and orange LUT?

Only after correcting the footage. A LUT is a fixed input-to-output mapping with no knowledge of your exposure, white balance or where the faces are, so on uncorrected footage it produces a consistent version of whatever was already wrong, and it will not protect skin. Use one as the palette step, not as the whole grade.
