Color grading in Final Cut Pro: a 2026 guide

Grade in Final Cut Pro 12.3: camera LUTs and library setup, Color Wheels and Curves, a balance-match-look order, and five mistakes that cost time.

Color grading in Final Cut Pro comes down to four decisions: set the library's color processing before you import, let the camera LUT interpret your log footage, correct each clip with Color Wheels or Color Adjustments until the scopes agree, and only then build a look on a second effect layered on top. Everything else is detail.

This guide is written against Final Cut Pro 12.3, released 30 June 2026, which added a Match Color tool, Auto Mask and Edit Detection (Apple release notes, read 13 September 2026). If you are on 11.x the color effects are the same; the three features named above are the ones you will not find.

Set up the library before you touch a wheel

Final Cut Pro's color behaviour is decided by a setting most editors never open: the library's color processing. Apple is explicit about the consequence. Set a library to Standard or Wide Gamut (Deprecated) and apply a camera LUT, and "the media is tone mapped (downgraded) to the narrower standard dynamic range (SDR)" (Apple, read 13 September 2026).

That single sentence explains a large share of "my log footage grades badly in FCP" complaints. You shot fourteen stops, the library threw most of them away at import, and every wheel you move afterwards is working on what survived. Select the library in the sidebar, open the Library Properties inspector, and set color processing to Wide Gamut HDR before you bring log or HDR media in. Changing it later re-renders, and anything you already crushed does not come back.

Camera LUTs and log footage

Final Cut Pro handles log by applying a camera LUT — in Apple's words, a set of data that "enables a numeric transformation of pixel values". You usually do not have to choose it: Final Cut Pro "detects metadata in the media identifying the log format" and applies the matching built-in LUT (same page).

You override it in the Info inspector, not the Color inspector. Click Info, open the Metadata View pop-up at the bottom left, choose General, Extended or Settings, and the Camera LUT pop-up is there. Two cases need your attention:

  • The metadata is missing or wrong. Footage re-wrapped by a transfer tool, or from a camera whose profile the file does not name, arrives flat with the LUT set to None. Pick the matching entry by hand rather than fixing it with a contrast curve.
  • You want a different rendering. The built-in LUT is one interpretation of the log curve, not the only one. If you prefer a third-party conversion, set Camera LUT to None first, then apply the LUT as an effect. Leaving both on is a double transform, and it will clip.

The color tools you actually have

Final Cut Pro's color effects live in the Color inspector, and Apple describes each one in a single line (Apple, read 13 September 2026):

Two one-click helpers sit alongside them: Balance Color, which Apple describes as a way to "balance a clip's colors", and the Match Color tool, which in 12.3 will "match your video's color across different cameras, lighting conditions, and cinematic styles" (Apple release notes).

On the Color Wheels effect specifically: drag the control in the centre of a wheel to move color, the slider on the right for brightness, the slider on the left for saturation. The Global wheel moves the whole image; the other three move shadows, midtones and highlights only. Single Wheels view gives you one large wheel at a time, which is worth switching to the moment you are doing anything delicate.

A first-pass workflow: balance, match, look

The order below is the same one that works in any grading application — the seven-step version is here — expressed in Final Cut Pro's own controls.

1. Confirm interpretation. Library on Wide Gamut HDR, Camera LUT correct, exactly one normalisation in play. Open the video scopes and check that the trace now uses the full height of the graticule rather than sitting as a compressed band in the middle.

2. Balance the hero shot. Pick the shot with the most typical content and lighting for the scene — not the prettiest one — and correct it properly. Add Color Wheels. Set the black point with the Shadows brightness slider until the bottom of the waveform touches the floor without stacking into a solid line. Set highlights near but not at 100. Then neutralise: drag the Global wheel until a surface you know is neutral reads neutral, and check that faces sit along the skin line on the vectorscope. Reading a waveform and reading a vectorscope cover what those two displays are telling you.

3. Match the rest of the scene to it. Two routes. Copy the corrected clip, paste its attributes onto the next clip and adjust — reliable, because you can see every value you inherited. Or select the corrected clip and use Match Color on the one that needs to move, then verify on scopes rather than on the thumbnail. Whichever you use, match against a clip you have already finished correcting; matching to an uncorrected shot propagates its error across the scene.

4. Build the look on a separate effect. Add a second instance — Color Curves or Hue/Saturation Curves — above the correction. Keeping the look on its own effect means you can disable it to check your correction underneath, and you can copy the look alone to another shot without dragging the correction's clip-specific values with it. If you are reaching for a warm-cool split, teal and orange, done well is the honest version of that look, and cinematic color grading covers how film looks are actually built.

5. Secondaries last. Hue/Saturation Curves handles most of what editors used to mask: pull saturation out of one hue band, move a sky's hue a few degrees, lift luma on skin without touching the rest. When a shape really is needed, 12.3's Auto Mask will "isolate recognized objects with Auto Mask to effortlessly color correct or enhance your video".

6. Verify in motion. Play the scene at speed before you call it. A match that holds on the frame you paused at drifts through a pan or an iris change more often than anyone expects.

Five mistakes editors make in Final Cut Pro

Grading on the Color Board out of habit. It survives for compatibility with old projects. Color Wheels gives you the same intent with far finer control and a layout that matches every other grading tool you will ever open.

Double-normalising. A camera LUT applied automatically plus a conversion LUT you dropped on as an effect equals two transforms. The result is contrasty, clipped, and no amount of curve work fixes it. Set Camera LUT to None if you are supplying your own.

Grading in the Standard color space by accident. New libraries do not default to Wide Gamut HDR. If you shoot log and never change it, you are grading a tone-mapped copy of your footage and blaming the software.

Trusting the viewer over the scopes. Your eyes adapt to a cast within seconds; a waveform does not. Half the grades that look wrong on another screen looked fine on yours because you had been staring at them for ten minutes. Why your grade looks off collects the usual causes.

Pushing saturation to fix a balance problem. Skin pointing ten degrees off the vectorscope's skin line is a white balance error. Saturation makes it louder, not more correct. Fix the neutral first, then decide how saturated you want the picture.

When Final Cut Pro's own tools are enough

For most work, they are. A single-camera interview, a short shot on one body under controlled light, a documentary cut where consistency matters more than a signature look — Color Wheels plus Hue/Saturation Curves will finish all of it, and 12.3's Match Color removes a large part of the shot-to-shot grind.

Final Cut reaches its limits in three places. There is no node graph, so complex grades become a stack of effects whose order you have to hold in your head. Reference-image work is not a first-class feature: you can eyeball a still side by side, but nothing computes the mapping for you. And collaboration is awkward, because the grade lives inside a library rather than in portable grade data. FAQ

Is Final Cut Pro good for color grading?

For correction and consistency, yes. Color Wheels, Color Curves and Hue/Saturation Curves cover primaries, contrast shaping and secondaries, and 12.3 added a Match Color tool for cross-camera work. What it lacks against a dedicated grading application is a node graph, reference-image matching and portable grade data, which matter on multi-camera narrative work and in collaborative finishing.

Why does my log footage look flat in Final Cut Pro?

Either the camera LUT was not applied, or the library's color processing is throwing your range away. Check the Camera LUT pop-up in the Info inspector first — Final Cut applies it from file metadata, and re-wrapped files often lose that metadata. Then check that the library is set to Wide Gamut HDR, because Standard tone maps log media down to SDR on import.

Should I use the Color Board or Color Wheels?

Color Wheels. The Color Board predates it and remains for older projects. Color Wheels gives you Global, Shadows, Midtones and Highlights with separate brightness and saturation sliders per wheel, which is both more precise and closer to how every other grading tool is laid out.

How do I match two cameras in Final Cut Pro?

Correct one shot properly first — that shot becomes the target. Then either paste its attributes onto the second clip and adjust, or use the Match Color tool in 12.3, which matches color "across different cameras, lighting conditions, and cinematic styles". Verify the result on a waveform and vectorscope, not by eye: two shots that look close on a thumbnail often have black points a full stop apart.

Do I need LUTs to color grade in Final Cut Pro?

Only for interpreting log. That conversion is what the built-in camera LUT does, automatically. Creative LUTs are optional and, applied as a fixed mapping to clips that were never corrected first, usually make the problem worse rather than better. Correct, then look.

Can I grade Final Cut Pro projects on a reference image?

Not natively — Final Cut has no reference-image match. You can put a still in the viewer and grade toward it by eye, or match the shot in a tool that computes the mapping and bring the graded file back. Either way, correct the shot before you chase a reference, since a match computed from an uncorrected shot inherits its error.
